For a golfer, attitude is everything. Whether your attitude is good or bad, your golf game will often follow suit. If your thoughts are full of pleas to the golf gods not to feel embarrassed as you walk up to the first tee, you have already reduced your chances of playing a good round. Similarly your odds of having a pleasurable and relaxing day on the course are all but gone.
Standing at the first tee you might have the benefit of clubs specifically designed to allow you to drive further, the right type of ball for those additional ‘in-flight ‘ yards, and the type of shoes Tiger Woods wore when he was ranked number 1, but unless you maintain the right disposition so that you can control your emotions, you are doing yourself, and your fellow golfers, a huge disservice.
The most amazing thing to most amateur and recreational golfers is that controlling themselves mentally and emotionally is a key component in each professional golfers game. These abilities are most generally referred to as mental golf. Mental golf techniques are far less daunting to learn than you may well think, and will improve golf of any golfer, at any level of play.
Just as noise can distract you from your shot, so can your attitude and your fears. The golfers behind you can be loud and obnoxious but that’s not something that you can control. Your attitude and your emotions are. Relatively simple mental golf techniques like visualizing your success or mentally rehearsing a shot in your subconscious until it becomes the likeliest result on the course, have helped pro golfers such as Tiger Woods improve their golf and stay at the top of their game for years at a time. In fact Tiger’s most recent fall from the top started when he got distracted with off-the-course affairs and his mental golf game suffered.
Occasionally you just know the second the club swings toward the ball that it is going to be a good shot. This is a feeling all golfers have experienced and it greatly improves your attitude during a round. Having this happen all of the time may not be possible, but having it happen more often is possible using mental golf techniques.
With golf attitude is everything and attitude is something you can create by controlling your feelings and permitting yourself to play better. For any golfer who wants to improve their game, all you’ve got to do is to decide to do so by improving your mental golf. You will play better and enjoy yourself more on the course.
